Hello, curious beings!
According to Neuro-linguistic Programming, your brain is like a computer & according to me, that is a VERY good thing.
When I first heard the term Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), I was put off. I thought it sounded scarily automated and inhuman (let’s be real, it does sound automated and inhuman).
Still, a real-life human I trust (aka my seestar) suggested I look into the work, so I trepidatiously explored. In retrospect, I’m so glad I did. When done right, NLP coaching allows change in ways that feel safe and are effective.
As a transformational coach, NLP is one helpful tool I use to facilitate big change for my clients.
Neuro-linguistic Programming especially works in conjunction with other healing modalities because it directly interacts with our natural computer (the brain!), which functions in precise ways.
To be clear, we aren’t a computer; we have a computer (also read – our computer is by no means more important than any other part). However, learning how to communicate with and ‘upgrade’ the brain’s software can be quite life-changing.
At its most basic form, NLP coaching is an unconventional conversation where practitioners meet clients in the present moment to upgrade their outdated software.
In NLP coaching sessions we are able to change previously stuck behaviors, patterns, beliefs, and even identities. This could mean less procrastination or more self-compassion. The possibility for change is limitless.
Each of us has our own map of the world.
Our maps are created from our perceptions, experiences, and how we make meaning. Often when we engage with another person, we understand their experience through our own map.
NLP affords us the opportunity to meet important people in our lives on their maps, building deeply connected relationships.
For ourselves, NLP allows us to notice, navigate, and then expand our own map, which creates big, fluid, repeatable change.
Try This Simple NLP Exercise
1. Think of a state of being you’d like to occupy in life.
Some options:
Happy
Peaceful
Successful
Loved
Any state you think of is valid. Choose one.
2. Now ask yourself this question – How?
Happy, how?
Peaceful, how?
Successful, how?
Loved, how?
3. Answer the how for yourself, then go out and find another person who’s reaching for the same state. Ask them how and notice that the same word might have vastly different meanings for both of you.
NLP Coaching Allows Change by Investigating and Celebrating What Makes You Uniquely YOU
You, your wishes, and your experience are the starting point for everything that has been, what is, and what’s to come.
In my practice, I use specially crafted NLP exercises to address challenges, patterns, and/or traumas that may be limiting access to your true self. We focus on growing your internal experience so you’re able to truly include what you’d like and value in life.
I intend to guide my clients through uncovering what’s already there (in the software), which may allow you to let go of old identity and beliefs no longer serving you.
Remember, you know best. As you might suspect, I encourage clients to experiment and find what feels best, according to them.
